On the 3rd and 4th of December I held my open studio, which people came and had a look around. We had to close early on the Saturday because a storm was brewing and my sails were ready to take off, so we made everything safe and got to sit in a warm house.

At the moment it is the children’s summer holidays which means I have to wear my Dad hat a lot more. We went away to a camping barn and the children had fun staying in “a little house” as my youngest put it. Oddly while I was away some interesting things happened. This year I am taking part in Artist Access to Art Colleges (AA2A) and I will be working out of the studios at Blackpool School of Art this year. I’m approaching my time at the Blackpool School of Art to combine a series of different skills. I want to finally work at AA2A cover a small part of the costs but I once I have my initial stages of testing I will be doing some crowdfunding to help pay for further development of the work, which will allow access to limited edition work. At my last supervisory meeting I was encouraged to create something a bit more visually interesting in my video than I had submitted at the meeting. The videos I submitted for the meeting were the first videos I had ever tried to edit on Lightworks rather than windows movie maker. I was just trying to get to terms with it all and create a functional lesson in a technique. Since January I have been using the title of “Devise and evaluate an e-learning model for the teaching of traditional crafts such as ceramics” for my research. It is a good title for a research project, but it isn’t what I tell people what I do when I talk to them and explain my work, it isn’t at the crux of the matter in my mind.

Last time I wrote about the importance of a narrow focus, I considered writing this one about having a broad focus. I changed my mind when I remembered Michael Kline’s post “play the Pro” which was about how we are all hobbyists at times. Michael has been playing around with slip inlay, and spent quite some time with the work under wraps until he felt more confident with it.
